C H A P T E R 13

Vanessa listened to the rings as she waited for Yancy’s voice mail to pick up. But instead, he answered at the last minute.

“Yancy, can you talk?” Her voice low, she half-suspected his wife to be near.

“Yeah. What’s up?” He sounded hard and tired.

“You weren’t at the hospital today. I was just wondering if you were okay.” It bugged her not knowing where he was. Married or not, the other night gave her some stake in the situation, and the moment he hadn’t showed up for work she wanted to know why.

“Yeah, I’m okay, baby. I’m in Georgia.”

“Georgia?” Vanessa was immediately worried. She couldn’t remember him mentioning any long-distance trips.

“DJ and I decided to separate, and what I thought would be an easy break turned out to be a disaster,” he quietly explained. “I think she was seeing someone behind my back Vanessa. She started taking days off work, lying to me. And that was it.”

“Oh no, Yancy! Are you serious?” Vanessa wished she were there with him. She wanted to put her arms around him, have him lean on her for comfort and support.

“Did she say anything about you staying out, the other night?”

“No, she thinks I was working. Besides, she’s too busy trying to manage her own affairs. I’m telling you, she just couldn’t be trusted. And I knew it! This marriage has been over for months. She’s changed so much. And now look, she just up and left with my kids. She didn’t give me a chance to say goodbye to my sons, can you believe that? She and the boys are staying down here with her family, so I decided to come say goodbye in person. To the boys,” he added.

“What do you mean ‘she just up and left’? You just said you two agreed to go your separate ways.” Vanessa asked, trying to make sense of the story.

“We did! But she’ll do anything to try and hurt me Vanessa,” he complained. “Instead of doing this the civilized way, she just up and leaves! I came down to say goodbye, to let the boys know that I love them,” he clarified. “It was a wasted trip, though. She wouldn’t let me see them.”

Vanessa gazed thoughtfully. Why would any woman hurt this man? She must be a basket-case. He deserves to be rid of her. Vanessa stifled a sigh.

“I hate to hear you so down.”

“The sound of your voice is just what the doctor ordered, or should I say ‘the nurse’.” Pause. “How was your day, honey? I know you didn’t spend your day missing me.”

“Cute. No, Princess caught a cold. I was thinking she picked it up from one of the kids at the playground that my mother takes her too. I don’t know.” Vanessa sunk back into her chair and rubbed the back of her neck. “Oh, but I spoke with my lawyer, and all my ducks are in a row. My money will be available tomorrow.” Her voice grew bubbly with excitement again.
